Operation Encompass

At Winterton Primary School and Nursery, we are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all our pupils. As part of this commitment, our school takes part in a national initiative called Operation Encompass, which is run in partnership with Norfolk Police.

What is Operation Encompass?

Operation Encompass is a scheme that helps schools to provide immediate support to children who may have been affected by domestic abuse. The initiative ensures that the school’s Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) is notified by the police before the start of the next school day if one of our pupils has been present at or exposed to a domestic abuse incident.

This timely information sharing allows us to offer support, care, and understanding to children when they need it most.

How does it work?

  • Norfolk Police inform the school’s Key Adult (the DSL or Deputy DSL) of any relevant incidents.

  • The information is shared in strict confidence and only with staff who need to know in order to support the child.

  • The school can then provide appropriate support, which might include additional pastoral care, a safe space, or simply being more aware of the child’s needs that day.

Our Commitment

  • We will always handle information with sensitivity and in line with our safeguarding and data protection policies.

  • We will support children in a way that helps them feel safe, valued, and ready to learn.

  • We will work in partnership with Norfolk Police, parents, and carers to safeguard our pupils.
