Winterton Primary School & Nursery

Class Information

Early Years Foundation Stage:

Early Years Teacher is Mrs Wells, she is supported by 2 Teaching Assistants.
The Starfish class are our class of Reception and year 1 children. They are the older children in our Foundation Stage Unit and they join with the rest of the school for assemblies, take part in whole school celebrations like Harvest and Christmas and enjoy lunch in the school hall. They also join in with the older children on the big playground at lunchtime but for most of the day they stay within the Foundation Stage Unit.

The Reception Children still follow a largely child-initiated curriculum where their interests and ideas are developed and expanded upon. They also follow key Reception teaching through topic-based activities. Our activities are hands-on and play-based and learning takes place at the child’s pace.

The Seahorse children are the other half of the Foundation Stage Unit making use of open access to the garden and outside area allowing for free-flow play. Both the Starfish and the Seahorse Classes learn together for the majority of the day, with activities aimed at all ages and abilities.

Key Stage 1 & 2:

In the Seal Class children are taught from Year 2 to Year 3 and in the Shark Class children are taught from Year 4 to Year 6. However, we always look at each of our children’s needs individually and in some cases our children work in a class different to their year group to ensure that they receive an education that is best tailored to their needs.

To support learning we have a well-stocked school library, a large outdoor area, a broad range of practical resources and equipment for each subject, a fantastic rural coastal location, as well as desktop computers, laptops and iPads for the children to use to further enhance their learning.

Alongside the statutory aspects of the National Curriculum, the children also have the opportunity to go on local trips and visits further afield, enjoy learning in special themed days and weeks, participate in competitions (both sporting and subject specific), experience visits by people/companies who come into school and take part in charity fundraising events (both locally and nationally.
